Tribute speech by Ms Ng How Ming at the funeral service in London 29 April 2022
About Wong Ah Keeu: We have all come here today to celebrate and to honour Ah Keeu.
Ah Keeu was born in Mersing, a town in Malaysia and she was one of 8 children in the family. Keeu was bilingual. Fluent in Chinese and English as she was educated in Chinese and English language medium schools.
On completing her education, she came to UK to do her nursing training in the early 70s at St Andrews Hospital in London. She soon found there were hundreds of Malaysians like herself in St Andrews and in other hospitals in the UK. This was due to the large-scale recruitment drives by the NHS in the Commonwealth countries to fill the acute staffing shortage in the hospitals.
While working as a nurse in the early 70's, she became actively involved in Malaysian student activities at the London Union of Malaysian Students (LUMS). The flat she was sharing with GE and WanFun (who were her fellow nurse activists) in Bayswater was the hub for planning activities. Many students and nurses passed through their doors and will not forget their generosity and hospitality.
Despite the demands of a full-time nursing job and LUMS activities, with a few of her fellow nurse activists, they formed the Malaysian Nurses Society (MNS) to address the needs of the Malaysian nurses in UK.
Many of us here have benefitted from her expertise as an ophthalmic nurse practitioner. She was passionate about educating anyone on the importance of the care of the health of eyes, vision and sight.
If you called Ah Keeu about an eye problem, she would take time to listen and probe you with questions before advising on what should be done.
After a long service in the NHS, Ah Keeu retired when she was 68 years old. In recognition for her long service of 25 years with Moorfields Eye Hospital, Moorfields awarded her a trophy, a fitting tribute for her dedication and service to the NHS.
Ah Keeu volunteered to work in projects to third-world countries with the eye specialist teams from Moorfields. On one trip to Uganda, she wrote to a friend that it ‘was very hard work’ but added that she was ‘touched by the Ugandan people’.
After retiring, she continued to volunteer in some of the fieldwork trips.
When she became seriously ill with leukemia, she fought it bravely and endured the chemotherapy, the radiotherapy with fortitude. Even in the last few weeks of her life, she was on the 'phone giving advice to friends who had eye problems! Not many knew what she was going through. It was her express wish to keep it quiet. She did not want to burden others. Let it be of comfort to us that she had the love and support of close friends in her last days.
When people learnt of her death, after the initial shock, tributes for her came in spontaneously. They spoke of her smile, cheerfulness, positive energy, her generosity. If there was a need, she would give unstinting help and support to friends and family to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Sometimes the support was financial, or she shared her home, or she taught English or gave emotional support. She liked children and took an interest in the well-being of the children of family and friends. She would help out with babysitting. One friend who lives in Europe said that whenever they visited, she never failed to give their daughter an “angpow”. Another recalled that Aunty AK used to send music books and magazines to her in Malaysia. It was such a big deal to her as a child getting parcels from UK. Ask anyone who knew Ah Keeu and they will have a story to tell of how she cared. People mattered to her and she cared for them in her own cheerful way. END
